Section 179 Limits and Benefits

Business taxpayers can use Section 179 to deduct the purchase cost of qualifying vehicles, property, and equipment from their taxable income in the same tax year. These deductions are a popular way for businesses to acquire updated equipment, reduce their tax liability, and continue to reach new goals. Current limits for 2025 include:

  • $2,500,000 Deduction Limit - Increased from $1,220,000 in 2024, the Section 179 deduction limit is the amount your business can spend on qualifying new or used equipment. For eligibility during the 2025 tax year, purchased or leased equipment must enter service before December 31st, 2025.
  • $4,000,000 Spending Cap - Increased from $3,050,000 in 2024, the Section 179 spending cap is the total combined value of equipment you can acquire during the same tax year. Section 179 tax deductions begin to phase out dollar for dollar after reaching the spending cap, helping smaller businesses benefit the most.
  • 100 Percent Bonus Depreciation - Increased from 60 percent in 2025, bonus depreciation is an additional deduction that helps businesses offset depreciation for eligible vehicles and equipment during the first year of ownership. Bonus depreciation is often combined with Section 179 to yield a larger deduction, though some restrictions may apply.

Qualifying Vehicles for Section 179

Businesses can finance or lease a wide range of vehicles, as long as they are used for business operations more than 50 percent of the time. Eligible vehicles must have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 6,000 pounds or more, which often excludes select SUV configurations.
